For Emma Roberts, Self-Care Is All About Gua Sha And Sound Baths
As well as having appeared in some stellar films (We’re The Millers emphatically included on that list), Emma Roberts is the founder of online book club Belletrist and one of Hugo Boss’s BOSS Alive fragrance ambassadors. Oh, and she has a smile almost as wide as her aunt, Julia Roberts’s. From her evening skincare routine to the sound baths she loves, the pregnant star shares her self-care secrets with British Vogue.
On her evening skincare routine
Lately I have been double cleansing in the evening, something I’ve never done before, which I really enjoy. I’ve been using the Georgia Louise Cleansing Balm and then the Georgia Louise pH Perfecting Wash. I follow with a Dr Barbara Sturm serum – either the Super Anti-Aging or the Hyaluronic. Both are amazing for moisture, which is what I want out of my skincare. I’ll finish with a cream from Drunk Elephant or La Mer, and I also love the Drunk Elephant Vitamin C Eye Cream. I notice a big difference when I use that for sure.
On body oil
I love body oil – I’m obsessed. I just ran out of my Osea Undaria Algae Body Oil; it’s such an amazing brand and I love all their stuff. I also use their amazing bath salts in my evening baths.
On her favorite facialists
I love getting a good facial – I’ve really missed them during quarantine. In New York I love Tracie Martyn – when you leave her you look like you’ve just gotten back from a vacation, it’s truly an amazing facial. When I’m in LA I love Biba – she’s absolutely incredible and I’ve been seeing her since I was a teenager. I’ve also started seeing Georgia Louise and she does Gua Sha with this amazing rose quartz butterfly tool that I absolutely love. I’ve been trying it myself in quarantine – it’s been a nice little nighttime routine.
A spritz of perfume can really boost your mood in the way that it makes you feel complete. Like, you know, you can not be wearing make-up, but if you put on an outfit and spray a little perfume, you instantly feel more put together. I think, especially right now, it’s good to do little things to make you feel like your day has started and that you’re feeling good about yourself. I like to spritz mine on my neck and wrist, and a little in my hair.
On her favorite beauty tip
I would say my mom always gave me the advice that less is more. It’s not something that I abided by as a teenager, you know, I wanted red nails, red lips, a smoky eye. When you’re younger you just want to pile it on, but now I’m all about a tinted moisturizer, some dark mascara, and a nude pink nail polish on my nails and toes. I just try to keep it simple and wear nothing that’s too crazy day to day. I always love when I see my girlfriends looking natural – that’s when I think they look most beautiful.
On her daytime look
Most of the time, I don’t wear make-up – I’ll literally do my skincare routine and maybe do a special mask. I love the Kora Organics Turmeric Mask – it really brightens your skin immediately. But if I am doing make-up, I love the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder foundation, a Chanel mascara and Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lip pencil, which I put all over my lips as a stain. Then Chanel’s Health Glow Cream-Gel Bronzer, which is the best
On her favorite hair-care products
Hair products are the one thing that I don’t have a ton of – I just have the bare minimum. I love Kérastase for shampoo and conditioner, and I also recently started using Drunk Elephant’s products – I love what they do to my hair. Then I’ll just use some Unite 7 Seconds after I get out of the shower and some R&Co glossing cream. Or do nothing. I just let my hair do what it wants when I’m not working.
On wellness rituals
I’ve loved doing virtual yoga in quarantine. It really helped get me moving and feel centered. I’ve also been doing a lot of sound baths. I follow Sacred Light Healing on Instagram, and they do them online and they’re really amazing. So those have been really nice for me, a bit of a meditation.
In terms of wellness in general, I’m always trying to incorporate more wellness into my life. Just trying to put my electronics away early in the evening, and prioritising a nice bedtime routine of taking a bath and reading my book; just taking time for myself to unwind.
On her go-to workout
I love Taryn Toomey’s The Class. I always feel amazing afterwards. I love that not only are you getting a workout but you’re moving the energy in your body, which I think is very powerful.
On what makes her feel happy
I always love the feeling of starting a new book that you’ve been excited to read. Especially lately, just diving into a new book and really getting to spend the day or the night reading has been such a luxury. It gets me so excited, because then I keep thinking of all the friends I’m going to get a copy for, if they’re going to like it, and what we’re going to talk about. I just think a good book is just the best conversation starter.
